A wedding garter is a piece of fabric or lace worn by brides on their special day. Traditionally worn around the bride's thigh, the garter has been a part of wedding ceremonies since ancient times and is an important part of the bridal tradition today.
The first record of a wedding garter dates back to 1461 when King Edward IV gave Lady Elizabeth Woodville a diamond-studded garter as a sign of their commitment. Since then, garters have become an iconic accessory for many brides to wear on their wedding day. Today, there are several styles available for brides to choose from, depending on the look they are trying to achieve.
The traditional style of wedding garter consists of two strips of elastic or fabric and usually features intricate designs or embroidery in a range of colors and sizes. Some weddings also feature one larger piece in the center. These elaborate designs can even be custom-made with special beads and rhinestones for added bling!
Aside from simply adding elegance and beauty to any wedding ensemble, the garter has symbolic significance as well. The concept dates back to Medieval Europe when guests would try to tear off pieces of the bride's gown following the ceremony; any pieces that remained were considered good luck charms. This inspired grooms to take it one step further and offer his bride's garter up at the reception as a way to deter potential tease-seekers while blessing his new wife with good fortune in her marriage!
Nowadays, it's common for brides to keep one garter for themselves as momento and offer another up during their reception (either wrapping it around the groom's arm or hiding it away for guests to find). The bride will throw her bouquet and then toss her single garter into crowd waiting below - much like throwing a baseball! This tradition is meant to bring luck upon whichever fortunate guest catches it.
